Participation in the 2nd “Pueblos del Maíz” in Bergamo, Italy

The Usuki Creative City of Gastronomy Promotion Council was invited to the 2nd “Pueblos del Maíz (Peoples of Corn)” held in Bergamo, Italy, from September 3 to 7, and dispatched Chef Satoshi Kamei of Kawaguchiya Villa Hisaraku. This invitation came about as a result of Usuki having invited a chef from Bergamo to the “Usuki Gastronomye Festival 2024” held in our city last year.

Four UNESCO Creative Cities of Gastronomy participated

In addition to Usuki, chefs from Tucson (Arizona, USA), San Antonio (Texas, USA), and Thessaloniki (Greece) also took part in the event, each presenting distinctive local dishes featuring corn. Chef Kamei showcased two dishes using “mochi tōkibi,” a traditional glutinous corn variety from Oita Prefecture.

These dishes were prepared using locally available tofu and white fish, combined with seasonings brought from Usuki—such as miso, soy sauce, and kabosu pepper—and mochi tōkibi produced in Oita Prefecture, to faithfully recreate the flavors of Usuki. The dishes drew strong interest and curiosity from local gourmets and provided an excellent opportunity to highlight the appeal of Usuki’s gastronomy.

Collaboration among chefs

At the collaborative dinner event held on September 6, chefs from each city joined forces to create a unified course menu. The occasion was marked by a strong sense of mutual respect that transcended differences in language and culture, as well as the pride of professionals working together at the highest level. Through this initiative, Usuki not only enhanced its visibility, but also deepened ties with other participating Creative Cities of Gastronomy. The chefs pledged to meet again in the future before they set off on their return journey. Further exchange and collaboration with these cities is anticipated going forward.

The Usuki Creative City of Gastronomy Promotion Council will continue to promote Usuki’s rich gastronomy through activities both in Japan and abroad.
